Spring is coming and days

March 31st, 2005

Fuji Neopan SSSpring is coming and days are getting brighter. After using 400 speed films almost exclusively I have made the switch to 100, to see what it’s like. Not only that, I am trying out the Neopan SS film, which is only sold in Japan. After a raving review by a top Hawaiian wedding photographer, I thought I should test it out and see what comes out.

Anyone else with experience with that film?

well as you know I have some experience with it, but i’ve never processed it myself and I suspect that would make a lot of difference. The first 3 shots here are for sure with the SS stuff:

But hey, isn’t a German using “SS” film politically incorrect? :)

I know, it took me a year to bring myself to using it.

Anyway, your pics are bloody sharp! How does it scan?

well, in all honesty i don’t remember….at any rate the sharpness is probably due to agressive USM in PS more than anything, as I look at those now they look rather brittle…..my overriding memory of the film was blah grey, but again this was without processing on my own, and also at that time my “post-processing” (eg. Photoshop) skills were rather limited. Here’s another SS shot I dug up:

Great film — you can buy it here in the US - I have a whole drawer full — I use it for night shots, too — great reciprocity — Very nice contrast and fine grain — good stuff.
